GDP Data for State, MSAs, and Counties
State Gross Domestic Product
The broadest measure of economic activity is the gross domestic product (GDP). Gross Domestic Product by State (GSP) measures the value-added from industries in that state. According to estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, in 2022, Missouri ranked 21st nationally in GSP at $336.63 billion in inflation-adjusted (chained 2017) dollars, a 2.0 percent increase from 2021 to 2022. Nationally inflation-adjusted GDP increased 1.9 percent over the same period.
Missouri’s private sector increased 2.2 percent from 2021 to 2022 and contributed over $300.78 billion to Missouri’s GSP in 2022 whereas Government and government enterprises increased by 0.1 percent, and contributed $35.92 billion.
Regions Gross Domestic Product
Missouri is divided into 9 regions. These regions were developed using the Workforce Development Areas created by the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 and continued with the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014. In 2023, the Northeast and Northwest regions were merged to make a greater “North” region.
Following interactive dashboard provides GDP data for these regions and the counties that make up that region. The filters can be used to select desired region, the year, and the GDP type. Click on a county in the map of the region to get trend of GDP for that county. This dashboard still allows selection of North as well as Northeast and Northwest regions, a feature that may not be available in the next update.
Metropolitan Gross Domestic Product
The Missouri Economic Research and Information Center (MERIC) analyzes Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data at the state, metropolitan statistical area (MSA), regional, and county levels. Gross Domestic Product by MSA measures the percentage of contribution by metropolitan statistical areas to Missouri's total GDP. This data coming from the Bureau of Economic Analysis is presented in both real dollars (adjusted for inflation in 2017 chained dollars) and current dollars (not adjusted for inflation).
This interactive dashboard can be used to see GDP data for Missouri MSAs by first selecting a desired year. By clicking a particular MSA in the map, trends in the GDP for that MSA over last several years will be shown.
County Gross Domestic Product
County GDP data provides the contribution of Missouri counties to the state’s total GDP. This data is available in both real dollars (adjusted for inflation) and current dollars (not adjusted for inflation).
